Jas said later that the river crossing proved quite exciting. “The current was suprisingly fast, and the rocks were large,” she explained. Patrick did not feel comfortable, especially with all the other horses around her.

But we knew none of that when time the Kenlyn convoy pulled in to Foresthill, close to nine a.m. We were nowhere near the convenient placement of Steve Hallmark’s trailer. In fact, we were just about as far as you could be from the vet check. However, since the Kenlyn group had wheelbarrows to haul tack, hay and blankets around, a tranquil spot would help the horses make the most of the required hour hold.

With the turned-around trail, the ride would be coming through the town and into the Foresthill vet check along the road, so there was no safe place for crew to meet their rider in advance. So a crowd began to cluster around the in-gate at ten o’clock. Information was circulating already about a horse and rider who had fallen off the trail. No information on who it was. Only the front runners were listed on the leaderboard. So everyone else just had to cross their fingers.

At about 10:15, word went up that someone was coming. First in to Foresthill was Dennis Summers, running alongside Lola. It was a little while until Jeremy Reynolds and Marvel and then Rachel Shackelford came in with Cody. She was apparently far ahead of where she was expected to be, as none of her crew was there to meet her. Fortunately there were other helping hands who dived in.

Cathy, Alice and I talked to the Kenlyn crew. We wanted to make sure that we weren’t caught flatfooted, even though we knew that our riders would be well back in the pack. We were outfitted with oversized red Kenlyn t-shirts, to make it easy for the riders to spot us in the crowd. I inched down the trail, trying to find a place where the dappled forest light gave me a chance of a picture. Brian got a call from his mother that they had come into the town of Foresthill. I began to think that colorcoding wardrobe and tack like some of the FEI riders would be a good idea too.

Finally I saw Jane. She was riding with Bob, Carol and Herb. “The others are about fifteen minutes behind us,” she said. Good. There would be time to get the front group through the vet check before Linda, Lynn and Jas came through.

Tack was piled in the waiting wheelbarrows, water applied where necessary, and hay handfed to the horses. Coolers went on — though it was getting warm in the sun, it was still only in the sixties. I went back out to the trail and waited. And waited. Eventually I caught sight of Steve Hallmark and Monica Bennett.

“They are right behind me,” Steve said. Clearly a flexible term. Finally I spotted Linda’s big grin.

Lynn and Jas were with her — they dismounted to walk the last few hundred yards.

Jas was feeding Patrick treats as she went, the bit already out of his mouth. Patrick went straight for the hay that Alice had ready just past the timers. He was very serious about it. There was nothing to eat along the trail.

“He just needs to get settled and then he will pulse right down,” Jas had told us. No need for a drenching, although Cathy sponged him in the chest area. Within a minute or two they were on their way to the pulse-taker. Patrick’s heart rate was down to sixty beats per minute, the criteria for the first vet check.

Now they had 38 miles under their belt, the horses were quite willing to stand and rest at the trailer. Our biggest obstacle was keeping Linda’s horse Enferno from trying to poach Patrick’s hay instead of eating his own. Alice stood guard to prevent them wasting energy on border wars.

By the time we made it out to the start gate after the hour hold, the mood was pretty relaxed. Jas even stopped just after leaving the out gate to converse with a woman who had recognized Patrick as an Akhal-Teke and wanted to ask about the breed. We waved Jas on with the assurance we would fill in the blanks — yes, promoting the breed was a goal, but not at the expense of time wasted!

Jane’s husband Murray had put himself in charge of feeding the riders and crew, so we took a moment to sit down and enjoy the spread. I couldn’t sit still for long, though — it was time to see what was going on at the vet check.

Believe it or not, the front runners were already coming in. This time it was Jeremy Reynolds and Marvel leading the way. Staggeringly fast. They looked good, though.
