If you are interested in becoming a police officer in Texas, you will have to meet two sets of standards. All police officers in Texas must meet the licensing requirements of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education, the TCLEOSE. Additionally, individual police departments can also have their own rules concerning minimum age, education, physical testing and training.
Education
All police officers in Texas must have the minimum of a high school diploma or GED and 12 hours of college credit. You also qualify if you have an honorable discharge after 24 months of active military service. Local departments may ask for a college degree or a certain number of college-level credit hours before hiring you as a police officer.
Depending on the department, you might be able to be hired with fewer hours of college education if you already have relevant experience. For example, the city of Midland, Texas requires 60 college hours for new officers with no experience, but only 15 hours for officers with three years of experience.
